Trump ups global tariffs to 15%, escalating clash with Supreme Court

Donald Trump Raises Global Tariff to 15% After Court Setback

President Donald Trump announced Saturday that he is increasing his newly imposed global tariff to 15%, less than 24 hours after introducing a 10% blanket levy on imports.

The move follows a ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States that struck down most of his previously enacted sweeping tariffs.

Court Blocks Broad Tariff Authority Under IEEPA

In a 6–3 decision on Friday, the Supreme Court ruled that Trump’s expansive use of tariff authority was not permitted under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

The justices determined that the 1977 statute did not authorize the broad global import duties the administration had implemented. As a result, the vast majority of the tariffs previously in effect were invalidated.

However, certain sector-specific duties — including tariffs on automobiles, auto parts, and semiconductor chips — remain in place.

The ruling marked a significant judicial check on executive authority over trade policy.

New 15% Global Tariff Takes Effect Immediately

In response, Trump announced a revised global tariff framework. On Friday, he declared a universal 10% import tax on all foreign trading partners. On Saturday, he escalated that rate to 15%.

“I, as President of the United States of America, will be, effective immediately, raising the 10% Worldwide Tariff on Countries, many of which have been ‘ripping’ the U.S. off for decades, without retribution (until I came along!), to the fully allowed, and legally tested, 15% level,” Trump wrote in a social media post.
