Trump Says U.S. Sending Naval Hospital Ship to Greenland, Raising Questions

WASHINGTON / NUUKDonald Trump said Saturday that the United States is dispatching a naval hospital ship to Greenland, the Danish territory he has repeatedly sought to bring under U.S. control, though officials in Washington and Copenhagen said they had no immediate details confirming such a mission.

“Working with the fantastic Governor of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, we are going to send a great hospital boat to Greenland to take care of the many people who are sick, and not being taken care of there. It’s on the way!!!” Trump wrote on social media, posting an image of the U.S. Navy hospital ship USNS Mercy.

The statement puzzled diplomats and defense officials, as both Greenland and Denmark operate universal public health care systems, and no formal U.S. humanitarian deployment to the Arctic island has been announced.

No Confirmation From U.S., Denmark, or Greenland

CNN reported that requests for clarification were sent to the White House, the Danish Embassy in Washington, the Danish government, Greenland’s parliament, and Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry, whom Trump appointed special envoy to Greenland in December.

The Pentagon referred inquiries to U.S. Northern Command, which directed questions to the Navy. The Navy did not immediately respond. Danish and Greenlandic authorities likewise said they had received no prior notice of any incoming U.S. medical vessel.

Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, provides health care through a nationalized system modeled on Nordic welfare states, offering residents publicly funded services across the island’s sparsely populated communities.

Strategic Context: Trump’s Push for Greenland

Trump’s latest claim comes amid renewed U.S. attention on Greenland’s strategic importance in the Arctic. The island sits between North America and Europe and hosts the U.S. military’s Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base), a key missile-warning and space-tracking installation on Greenland’s northwest coast.

In recent months, Trump has revived proposals for deeper U.S. control over Greenland, including:

  • acquisition talks with Denmark

  • expanded military basing

  • economic inducements to residents

  • Arctic security partnerships

In January, he said he had reached “the framework of a future deal” on Greenland with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, though Danish officials reiterated that sovereignty over Greenland is non-negotiable.

Hospital Ships: Mercy and Comfort

The U.S. Navy operates two large hospital ships:

  • USNS Mercy (Pacific)

  • USNS Comfort (Atlantic)

They provide surgical care during conflicts and humanitarian missions. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, USNS Comfort treated patients in New York City, while USNS Mercy deployed to Los Angeles.

Deploying such a vessel to Greenland would be unusual. The island’s ~56,000 residents are spread across coastal settlements accessible mainly by air or sea, but serious cases are typically transferred to Denmark or regional hospitals within Greenland’s public system.

Greenlanders Wary of U.S. Intentions

Trump’s renewed activism has stirred concern among Greenland residents, many of whom value the territory’s public welfare model and autonomy.
