Protests and counter-rallies erupted across major universities in Tehran for a second consecutive day, highlighting deepening divisions inside Iran’s academic community amid lingering unrest and rising geopolitical tensions.

Iranian state media reported that pro-government demonstrations took place Sunday in the capital, a day after anti-regime student protests marked the start of the new academic term. Verified videos circulating online showed scuffles between rival groups at Amirkabir University of Technology, where confrontations briefly turned physical before dispersing.

Mourning Period Fuels Campus Unrest

University officials say the demonstrations are closely tied to the traditional 40-day mourning period for victims killed during January’s anti-government unrest — a cultural milestone that often reignites protest activity in Iran.

Hossein Goldansaz, a professor at University of Tehran, told state-linked Mehr News that many students were grieving classmates and friends killed in the earlier crackdown.

“One of the students’ main points is that we are mourning for the people who lost their lives in these events, those who were our friends,” he said.

Goldansaz said the university would allow peaceful demonstrations if students respected official “red lines,” warning he would withdraw support if protests turned violent.
